I stretch the length of the bed, yawning. Down the hall Leela is slowing working into a wailing frenzy. She’s lost the five soothers I tucked her in with last night and is getting desperate. Sighing, I resign to leave my warm comfortable bed and start the day, trying desperately to ignore the nagging voice coming from somewhere in my hind brain, braying like a demented donkey, “sleeeeep, sleeeeep, sleeeep.”
It’s harvest and I’m tired.
No we don’t live on a farm. We aren’t busy gathering crops from acres and acres of field. I only have two gardens but at the moment they seem as large and indomitable as an Olympic sized swimming pool. The picking, canning, dehydrating, shelling, peeling, pulling, thinning, chopping are starting to wear on me and I am feeling like maybe a frost wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
Luscious crunchy apples transmute into sweet little treats that the girls are absolutely crazy for and that are safe for school snacks.
Zucchini rounds lightly brushed with oil and sprinkled with sea salt dry into delicious zucchini chips that taste lovely on their own or when served with a crunchy grain.
Strawberries, tomatoes and ground cherries, dried at the peak of perfection are preserved with all their flavour so we can enjoy these good foods well into the winter months. Even my baking beans ripen out faster when placed on top of the humming dehydrator and my thick greek-style yogurt ferments with just the right tang after eight hours in my magical machine.
Harvest is a lot of work (thank goodness it’s nearly over) but the fruits of fall’s labour will nourish us well into the winter and I’m so glad I’ve discovered a tool to make it a little less work.
