Ah summer, tis the season to hydrate. Sunny days and sultry nights culminate to produce record-pace body water loss and while this could prove to be trouble for those who chose to rehydrate with water only (boring!), summer harvests provide ample opportunity to indulge in a world of seasonal flavours that satiate your thirst as well as satisfy your palate. The addition of alcohol is of course optional.
My husband, kids and I recently spent some time at the family cabin in southern Manitoba. This property has been in the family for over half a century and while my grandparents are no longer the primary residents there, once we arrived, we seamlessly transitioned into the habits my grandparents instilled in us. The most important of these habits was “drinky-poo time”. While at the lake, it was tradition to stop work (yes work! There’s always plenty to do) for the day at around 4:30 and gather together as a family to rehydrate before supper. Aunts and uncles, kids and cousins all congregated on the deck and sipped on bevies, visited and generally enjoyed each other’s company in paradise. Rehydrating every day meant there was amply opportunity to indulge in seasonal flavours and drinky-poo time was never boring. Here are a few of my favourites.
Strawberry Lemon Splash
This treat is a little bit like lemonade but the sweetener comes not from honey or sugar but from strawberry jam (which in this case we’d made from local strawberries, picked the day before)
4 c. soda water
2 Tbsp lemon juice
2-4 Tbsp strawberry jam to taste
(2 oz. vodka optional)
Shake or stir until well blended.
2 c. red wine
1 c. orange juice
1 c. soda water
(2 tsp honey optional if you like it sweeter)
Stir until blended and serve with a few slices or orange.
